Uma Thurman dresses down in New York

As much fun as we have shopping for chic maternity clothes to show off our blossoming bump, there are times when expecting that we can all admit to sacrificing style for comfort.

However, just because you don't have the time or energy to glam up, this doesn't mean that you can get away with donning baggy old T-shirts and scruffy tracksuit bottoms, as there are plenty of ways that you can dress down when pregnant while still looking stylish.

But if you need a little inspiration for how to pull off the casual look, you may want to take a leaf out of Uma Thurman's book. The actress, who has revealed that she is expecting a girl with boyfriend Arpad Busson, has favoured the casual look during her pregnancy, but has still managed to look effortlessly stylish throughout.

Earlier this month, the Daily Mail spotted the star strolling around the shops in Manhattan dressed in comfortable drawstring trousers teamed with a wool blazer and a pair of black flats. And, once again sporting the make-up free, relaxed look, Uma was papped last week as she took some time out for a late evening lunch at the boat basin on the Upper West Side.

Accompanied by Busson, the 42-year-old wore a grey maxi skirt with a black knitted sweater, and accessorised the outfit with a tan leather handbag and some practical black sandals.

The key to dressing down when pregnant is to create a comfortable yet stylish look with minimum time and effort, and without looking sloppy or scruffy.

To these ends the best thing to do is to invest in a few good quality maternity wear pieces that are loose-fitting and easy to wear, such as comfy sweaters or cardigans and trousers with elasticated waists.

Although flat shoes are often the best choice for mums-to-be, you don't have to resort to trainers or old flip flops throughout your pregnancy - but instead opt for stylish pumps or sandals, such as those favoured by Uma.
