Kristin Cavallari covers bump in cute minidress

18th May 2012

While it can be tempting to conceal your bump under comfy cardies and long dresses while expecting, with the temperature finally creeping up again it may be time to start thinking about some summer maternity wear.

And mums-to-be who may be a little nervous about showing a little skin as their body shape begins to change can take some tips from Kristin Cavallari, who was spotted by the Daily Mail this week sporting a short but perfectly fitted minidress as she strolled through the Los Angles sunshine.

The former Hills star, who is currently pregnant with her first child, looked stylish and comfortable in the dress, which she teamed with a pair of flip flops are she treated herself to a healthy green juice.

We often see pregnant celebrities such as Kristen stepping out with nutritious, healthy choices of food and drink and, if recent research is to be believed, this could be the right way to go.

The old adage of 'eating for two' is at times used as an excuse to be a little over-indulgent when it comes to food, but a study by London-based researchers has shown that sticking to a healthy diet and not eating in excess is the best way to avoid complications.

Researchers found that those mums-to-be who dieted gained four kilos less than those who did not and were found to be at a significantly reduced risk of conditions such as pre-eclampsia, high blood pressure, and were a third less likely to give birth prematurely.

"Weight control is difficult but this study shows that by carefully advising women on weight management methods, especially diet, we can reduce weight gain during pregnancy," said Dr Shakila Thangaratinam, a consultant obstetrician at Queen Mary, University of London who led the study.

"It also shows that following a controlled diet has the potential to reduce the risk of a number of pregnancy complications."

However, experts still emphasise that it is important to maintain a healthy weight while expecting, so even if mums-to-be are planning to reduce their calorie intake they should also ensure that their diet is balanced and healthy.
