Jessica Simpson thrilled with new arrival

It surely can't have come soon enough, but after nine months in which we saw Jessica Simpson positively bloom, the actress has finally given birth to a baby girl.

Maxwell Drew was born just over a week ago and now Jessica has taken to Twitter to reveal just how besotted she is with her tiny daughter.

She tweeted: "I am so in love with baby Maxwell. I want to cry every time I look at her. Motherhood is by far the best thing I've ever experienced."

Welcoming a newborn into the world is one of the most exciting times for new mums, but becoming a parent for the first time can also be a rather daunting experience and many mothers will find themselves feeling unprepared.

In fact, recent research from The Essential Parent Company has found that over half of new parents are more confident changing a light bulb than they are their first nappy.

"So focused are expectant parents on the birth event, the practical abilities and responsibility of looking after a baby can come as a huge shock," says Dr Rebecca Chicot, founder of The Essential Parent Company. "It is impossible to describe how becoming a parent changes your life."

With all the new challenges and demands that come with parenthood, the survey suggested that as many as eight in ten new parents felt that they didn't have the practical skills to deal with a newborn, while one in three were unable to spot the signs of critical illness in a baby.

If you're a new mother and are feeling nervous or unprepared about the responsibilities of parenthood, the first thing to remember is that you are not alone, as all new mums and dads will feel out of their depth at some point.

The key is to try and find some support whether that be your partner friend or family member. Parent and baby groups can also be a great way to meet new friends and ease your concerns and anxieties as you will socialise with other new mums who will be going through the same experiences you are.
