Drew Barrymore conceals bump in striped dress

Deciding what to wear on a glamorous night out is hard enough without having to contend with a growing bump and swollen feet that won't quite fit into your favourite pair of heels.

However, just because you have a little one on the way doesn't mean that you can't look gorgeous when stepping out in the evening, as Drew Barrymore proved last weekend.

The Charlie's Angels actress, who is currently pregnant with her first child, was spotted by the Daily Mail looking relaxed and elegant in a loose-fitting striped dress as she joined her fiancee Will Kopelman at a private party in Beverley Hills.

Many women shy away from horizontal stripes when expecting for fear that they can be unflattering, but worn correctly they can really complement your changing figure.

Often stripes are seen to enhance a bump rather than camouflage it, and celebrities such as Kristen Cavallari and Alyson Hannigan have been pictured recently sporting figure-hugging striped sweaters that show off their blossoming shape.

However, for evening wear many expectant mums are more comfortable in softer pieces that conceal rather than enhance and, as Drew has shown, stripes can work well for this purpose too.

The key is to choose a loose-fitting style ideally with thick dark lines rather than bold bright colours, as these should allow you to reveal a hint of a bump while still being slimming.

And, while no glamorous mum-to-be would dream of stepping out in the evening without accessorising her outfit, with stripes it's best to keep jewellery to a minimum.

Conventional wisdom suggests that it's advisable to avoid heels during pregnancy because of the strain they can put on your body. For special occasions a pair of heels can be okay, but if you think you may be on your feet for a while it may be worth investing in a pair of simple classy flats that will complement your outfit and keep you comfortable.
