Are maternity bras and nursing bras the same thing?

As a part of our new blog series we’re trying to answer all the questions you guys have been emailing over. Today, we’re looking at whether maternity bras and nursing bras are the same thing.

Are all maternity bras just nursing bras?

The different features and benefits of maternity bras and nursing bras relate to their different purposes and so no, maternity bras are not just nursing bras!

What is the difference between nursing bras and maternity bras?

A maternity bra is designed for when you’re pregnant – it is soft, comfortable and designed to adapt to your changing body. At around eight to ten weeks into your pregnancy, you’ll start to notice your breasts growing and they will be really quite tender (the thought of someone touching them – NO! NO! NO!). At this stage, you should think about buying one or two maternity bras that do not have an underwire that you can wear for the rest of your pregnancy (and even after you’ve finished nursing, if you like!).

A nursing bra is designed for after you’ve given birth and you start feeding your little bundle of joy. We suggest you get fitted for two to three nursing bras about 2 weeks before your due date. You get loads of support and it will be super comfortable, with nursing clips and drop down cups that make feeding really easy. Once you’ve practiced a bit, you might even be able to start nursing one-handed and with one eye shut (or two!). All our nursing bras have 6 rows of hook & eye fastenings for prolonged use after your ribcage drops back down to (almost) its original size and have soft cotton slings so your sensitive skin won’t get irritated.

We’ve got a gorgeous range of maternity bras and nursing bras that are all available from our website. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to comment below or email info[at]amoralia[dot]com!

Should I wear my nursing bra at night?

We would suggest wearing a bra at night, though not an underwired bra! Don’t forget that you’ll still be feeding during the night and you’ll find that you’ll still need support & breast pads in case of any leaks.

Is it okay to wear my nursing bra at night?

It is perfectly fine to wear a nursing bra at night, in fact we would recommend it! From time to time you might experiences a little leakage during the night. Don’t worry, it’s happened to us all! But if you’re wearing a nursing bra, you can pop your breast pads into the cups, just in case. You could also try our Second Skin Organic sleep bra which, although it doesn’t have nursing clips, has enough stretch so you can just pull it to the side for feeds.

Just pick up some breastpads and slip them into your bra. Not only will your breast be supported, the pads will soak up any little leakage during the night. This means that you don’t have to worry about changing your bed once a day!

We have a fantastic range of nursing bras available on the site, if you have any questions feel free to get in touch!

Do you really need to buy a maternity bra when you are pregnant?

We’re often asked whether someone really needs to buy a maternity bra when they are pregnant and it’s understandable, really. When you’re pregnant you’re bombarded with recommendations on what to buy, what not to buy, when to buy things. You start wondering whether it’s all useful and think ‘what is the point?’

We might be a little biased, but we would really, really recommend buying a maternity bra.

Do you need a maternity bra when pregnant?

If you’re reading this, we are pretty sure that you already know what we are talking about. Your body is going through all these crazy changes and you’re just hanging on for dear life, kind of bemused at what’s going on. Your boobs are growing, your nipples are getting darker, your rib cage is getting bigger (oh god) and now you’re getting some weird dark line down your bump (‘linea nigra’ – Google it!).

The problem with your regular bra is that it’s not designed to respond to these changes your body is going though. It’s set to a more specific size with little or no room to adapt. Often they have an underwire which is a big no-no through pregnancy if you don’t want to get mastitis (again, you should Google, horrible-ness awaits)

A maternity bra is designed to adapt to the changes your body is going through. Our maternity bras are made from stretchy fabrics, often with a bit of added help in the form of elastane, that will adjust to your new curves 😉

They also don’t have an underwire. As we said before, you do not want to be getting mastitis and we’ve done all we can to protect your delicate breast tissue as it develops through your pregnancy.

Ultimately, it is your choice whether you decide to wear a maternity bra or not. Hopefully, we’ve done a bit to clear up why they are useful, so if you’re interested in seeing what one looks like, please take a look at our beautiful maternity bras.

Should you wear a nursing bra whilst sleeping?

It’s absolutely fine to wear a nursing bra when sleeping. You just need to make sure that it is not an underwired nursing bra.

Is it OK to wear a nursing bra to sleep in bed?

It’s perfectly OK to wear a nursing bra to sleep in. When nursing, your breasts can be very sensitive and could definitely do with the extra support that you get from wearing a bra when sleeping. There is another reason we would recommend wearing a bra to sleep in and this is to do with a little thing called leakage.

It’s not uncommon for some milk to leak during the night (we write this from personal experience after all). Changing the sheets or sleeping on a towel can get irritating pretty quickly. By wearing a nursing bra to sleep, you are able to slip in some breastpads that will absorb any leakage, leaving you to spring out of bed in the morning without the headache of changing your sheets… well, maybe not spring out of bed, but you get the idea!

If you haven’t already seen them, we have some great nursing bras here on the site. As always, if you have any questions, please get in touch! We would love to hear from you.

Can you buy nursing bras for larger breasts?

Of course, you can buy nursing bras for larger and smaller breasts alike. We don’t like to make people feel left out, so we stock a wide range of sizes for our nursing bras.

Can you get nursing bras for larger cup sizes?

The cup sizing for our nursing bras go up to an H cup. More often than not we are able to find a bra to fit most of our customers. We have even put together a  nursing bra size guide, to help you find your size. However, if you are unsure of the right size for you, please get in touch through email and we will help find the perfect bra for you.

Can I use a sports bra as a nursing bra?

There is nothing stopping you from using a sports bra instead of a nursing bra. After all, what you buy in preparation for the birth of your child is completely up to you!

Is it a good idea to use a sports bra instead of a nursing bra?

But rather than focusing on whether you can use a sports bra as a nursing bra, it’s probably better to question whether it is a good idea! Putting aside the fact that we run a maternity lingerie company, Jules can tell you as one mother to another that using a nursing bra is a much better idea.

In the name of investigative journalism (ish) we ask you to take a look at your sports bra. It’s designed with one purpose in mind – strap those babies down. Not conducive to… well… getting them out!

Besides this, we are willing to bet that your sports bra is also not the most attractive piece of underwear you own. It’s probably even worse than your old grannies (don’t pretend you don’t have some). When you wear your sports bra, we guess that don’t feel especially feminine – it’s just one of the necessities of life. With preserving femininity in mind, we’ve spent an awful lot of time designing our nursing bras to look fantastic as well as being incredibly functional.

We’re not the only ones that think so either, we’ve got plenty of very happy customers – check out our product pages for their reviews!

Can you wear a nursing bra during pregnancy?

Because your body is going through a lot of changes when you are pregnant, a nursing bra might not be the right choice for you during this time. However, it will be perfect when your little one does arrive!

Whilst there are lots of features built into a nursing bra that make it brilliant for when you are breast feeding. It still might be better to wear a maternity bra whilst you’re still pregnant.

Is it a good idea to wear a nursing bra during pregnancy?

It is a much better idea to wear a maternity bra during your pregnancy. Our maternity bras are designed to adapt and change with your body. They are made from soft, comfortable materials designed to stretch with your new found curves 🙂

When you are pregnant, your breasts are likely to be a little on the sensitive side (understatement of the year, for most!) and a good quality maternity bra will be a welcome relief from your regular bra. You’ll also find the underwire in your normal bras a problem during your pregnancy as it is the most common cause of mastitis.

However, if you find a soft, stretchy, comfortable nursing bra in your size, of course feel free to wear it during your pregnancy – this way, you can get as much wear out of your purchase as possible!

What is the difference between nursing bras and regular bras?

Today we are focusing on the differences between nursing bras and regular bras. It’s quite a good question, especially if this is the first time you are researching pregnancy & breastfeeding!

Are there any differences between nursing bras vs regular bras?

The main difference between nursing bras and regular bras is the nursing clips. You would find it really tough to nurse with a normal bra without these clips. If you wear a padded bra, this would also cause a few problems as it has not been designed to fold down and so would be stiff.

We have designed our nursing bras to make breastfeeding as simple as possible for you! We’ve incorporated easy to open one handed nursing clips and our bras are not padded, so you’ll be able to pull down the cups quickly and smoothly.

If you have any more questions, please do not hesitiate to get in touch!

We have now closed the site, but don’t worry, you can still get beautiful maternity & nursing lingerie at Cake Maternity. They make lovely products in a large range of sizes, which we’re sure you’ll also love. #lovethebodyyouarein
