Six newborn essentials

baby

Now that your baby is almost here, we’re sure that you have all your hospital bag essentials sorted! (But if you haven’t, look no further…)

But what about the essentials you need for your little one just after birth? We have rounded up our top six items that we think should be on your list! (After the main essentials like pushchair, car seat and nappies of course!)

Scratch Mittens

Mittens are definitely something that we recommend all new parents purchase! Newborn babies are used to being scrunched up in the womb, and it is very likely that they will instinctively put their hands up to their face in the days and weeks after birth. It is a good idea to keep mittens on your little ones hands whilst they sleep so that they cannot accidentally scratch themselves. Also, it is a good idea to purchase a pair of baby nail clippers – don’t attempt to use adult sized clippers on babies delicate hands and toes!

Lightweight hat

Scratch mittens lead us perfectly onto headwear! A hat is great to use post birth as the temperature difference can be a shock to your new baby. As we all know, a high percentage of our body heat is lost via our heads, so it makes perfect sense to cover up and stay warm. If your baby is experiencing a stay in hospital, it is advised you bring a hat, especially if your baby has to be taken to different wards for medications. Although it may seem warm, hospital corridors can be very cold when you are laying in a cot.

Baby brush and comb

One of the nicest things to do is to brush your babies hair for the first time! Invest in a special baby brush, which is made out of super soft bristles, ideal for a delicate head. Use just after washing to get rid of any tangles. Just remember to be gentle and to not apply too much pressure.

Muslin cloths

A big staple in any new babies world, muslin cloths can be used for a variety of things. Perfect for mopping up faces after a feed, placing over shoulder before winding and providing a little modesty when breast feeding, muslin cloths have been used for years. They are lightweight, soft and non-abrasive and best of all, so thin they dry super quick from the wash!

Baby bath

Invest in a baby bath for the first few months, so that both of your hands are free to clean and comfort your little one.  It is far safer for you to have both hands free rather than supporting you baby with one and frantically trying to clean with the other!

Sling

A sling is perfect for building a bond between you and your baby whilst still having the ability to get everyday jobs completed, such as washing up. Ideal for getting back to normal and into a new routine with your baby as well as encouraging skin to skin contact, a sling is something that many parents do not like to be without!

We have now closed the site, but don’t worry, you can still get beautiful maternity & nursing lingerie at Cake Maternity. They make lovely products in a large range of sizes, which we’re sure you’ll also love. #lovethebodyyouarein
