maternity bra

Mums&tots Sep15

Feature: Mums & Tots Monochrome

Mums&tots Sep15

It was great to see our Seamless One + Only range in the latest issue of Mums & Tots. The nursing bra £29, can be worn either with full coverage or, via a pull at the front, ruched in around the bust for when you want a little extra shape. Plastic clips offer easy nursing access for discreet breastfeeding and the strap adjusters have been moved the the front of the bra, for ease with mums ever changing shape.

The briefs £19, sit high to accommodate a growing bump or new-mum-tum, but can also be folded down to be worn low rise. Both pieces are super soft and can be worn throughout your pregnancy and into nursing and are available in a range of colours.

What should I buy; a maternity bra or a nursing bra?

One questions we’re asked time and again is whether you should buy a maternity bra or a nursing bra. It’s a good question as there is a little confusion as to whether or not they are the same thing.

The simple answer is that you should buy both. However, a maternity bra is designed for when you are pregnant and a nursing bra is for after you have given birth and feeding your new arrival.

Is there a difference between a maternity bra and a nursing bra?

There are some very specific differences between each type of bra. We have designed our maternity bras to grow with your developing body and to be super comfortable – soft fabrics and plush linings are really important to us so your extra sensitive skin won’t get irritated.

Our nursing bras are also made with comfort in mind, as well as allowing easy access when feeding. In fact, we have designed our nursing bras so that you can use them one handed – great for when you’ve got a wriggling baby in your arms.

Is a maternity bra better than a nursing bra?

There is no right or wrong answer to this question, as they are designed for completely different stages of your journey. However, we would not recommend wearing a regular underwired bra when pregnant as you’re more likely to develop mastitis as your boobs grow. The advantage of a maternity bra is that it will adapt to your changing body throughout your pregnancy.

We have a fantastic range of both maternity bras and nursing bras available on our site. Please let us know if you have any further questions in the comments below.

What’s the difference between a maternity bra and a nursing bra?

It’s a question that we get asked all the time; what is the difference between a maternity bra and nursing bra? Although it’s one we get often, it’s still a really good question and you shouldn’t feel silly if you don’t know the answer! Hopefully you’ll understand it a bit more soon!

So, what comes first, a nursing bra or a maternity bra?

We think that this one is fairly self-explanatory (the clue is in the name!). We would recommend that a maternity bra is worn when you are pregnant and a nursing bra is for after you have given birth. This is mostly because both of these have their own special benefits and features.

A maternity bra is designed to support your breasts as they grow during your pregnancy. Often sensitive breasts are the first sign that you’re pregnant and a maternity bra will (if everything goes to plan) be much more comfortable than your normal one. Our maternity bras are designed to be extremely comfortable and to adapt to your changing body. They have wider straps and they do not have underwires, so that there is no added pressure on breast tissue which can cause painful mastitis. Our maternity bras also have 6 rows of hook & eye fastenings so that they are as flexible as you need them to be.

Now we can ask; what is the difference between a nursing bra and a maternity bra?

A nursing bra (no prizes for guessing) has nursing clips! This is the main difference that you’ll need to remember when deciding what to buy. You can, however, still wear a nursing bra during your pregnancy.

Our nursing bras are designed to make breastfeeding easier and make you feel gorgeous. They have standard plastic clips that are easily unclipped for one-handed feeding. We think you’ll find this particularly helpful when baby is struggling in your arms!

Leaving enough room to grow in your maternity bra

When you are buying a maternity bra, you need to remember that your breasts are likely to go up from between one to two cup sizes through your pregnancy (this should settle down in your second trimester but you’ll need a bit of room before you give birth, when your milk starts to come in). Our best tip here is to make sure that you can fit your hand inside the cup, and make sure that you’re fitted on the last hook (if getting it fitted a couple of weeks before you give birth) If you are unsure of the size to buy, we have a handy sizing chart on all of our maternity bra product pages. You can take a look for yourself here.

Are maternity bras and nursing bras the same thing?

As a part of our new blog series we’re trying to answer all the questions you guys have been emailing over. Today, we’re looking at whether maternity bras and nursing bras are the same thing.

Are all maternity bras just nursing bras?

The different features and benefits of maternity bras and nursing bras relate to their different purposes and so no, maternity bras are not just nursing bras!

What is the difference between nursing bras and maternity bras?

A maternity bra is designed for when you’re pregnant – it is soft, comfortable and designed to adapt to your changing body. At around eight to ten weeks into your pregnancy, you’ll start to notice your breasts growing and they will be really quite tender (the thought of someone touching them – NO! NO! NO!). At this stage, you should think about buying one or two maternity bras that do not have an underwire that you can wear for the rest of your pregnancy (and even after you’ve finished nursing, if you like!).

A nursing bra is designed for after you’ve given birth and you start feeding your little bundle of joy. We suggest you get fitted for two to three nursing bras about 2 weeks before your due date. You get loads of support and it will be super comfortable, with nursing clips and drop down cups that make feeding really easy. Once you’ve practiced a bit, you might even be able to start nursing one-handed and with one eye shut (or two!). All our nursing bras have 6 rows of hook & eye fastenings for prolonged use after your ribcage drops back down to (almost) its original size and have soft cotton slings so your sensitive skin won’t get irritated.

We’ve got a gorgeous range of maternity bras and nursing bras that are all available from our website. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to comment below or email info[at]amoralia[dot]com!

Do you really need to buy a maternity bra when you are pregnant?

We’re often asked whether someone really needs to buy a maternity bra when they are pregnant and it’s understandable, really. When you’re pregnant you’re bombarded with recommendations on what to buy, what not to buy, when to buy things. You start wondering whether it’s all useful and think ‘what is the point?’

We might be a little biased, but we would really, really recommend buying a maternity bra.

Do you need a maternity bra when pregnant?

If you’re reading this, we are pretty sure that you already know what we are talking about. Your body is going through all these crazy changes and you’re just hanging on for dear life, kind of bemused at what’s going on. Your boobs are growing, your nipples are getting darker, your rib cage is getting bigger (oh god) and now you’re getting some weird dark line down your bump (‘linea nigra’ – Google it!).

The problem with your regular bra is that it’s not designed to respond to these changes your body is going though. It’s set to a more specific size with little or no room to adapt. Often they have an underwire which is a big no-no through pregnancy if you don’t want to get mastitis (again, you should Google, horrible-ness awaits)

A maternity bra is designed to adapt to the changes your body is going through. Our maternity bras are made from stretchy fabrics, often with a bit of added help in the form of elastane, that will adjust to your new curves 😉

They also don’t have an underwire. As we said before, you do not want to be getting mastitis and we’ve done all we can to protect your delicate breast tissue as it develops through your pregnancy.

Ultimately, it is your choice whether you decide to wear a maternity bra or not. Hopefully, we’ve done a bit to clear up why they are useful, so if you’re interested in seeing what one looks like, please take a look at our beautiful maternity bras.

How do I know what size maternity bra to buy?

We know that it is quite daunting, deciding what bra size to buy. Even in ‘normal’ lingerie, we are constantly being told that 80% (give or take) of women are wearing the wrong sized bra. Then you find out you’re pregnant and you start doing your research and suddenly you find that it’s the worst thing ever if you’re wearing the wrong bra size. Let’s try not to panic now, shall we? Whilst we can’t comment on other companies sizing, we can talk you through how ours works!

How does maternity bra sizing actually work?

We currently have three maternity bra styles in stock; the Second Skin maternity bra, the Second Skin Organic sleep & yoga maternity bra and the Second Skin strapless maternity bra and we are going to take you through the sizing for each of these below.

Second Skin maternity bra

Second Skin_Maternity Bra_Ivory

This is our fantastic everyday maternity bra, made from silky soft microfibre. The lower centre-front and wrap over design mean that you can wear lower cut tops and embrace your new curves! This maternity bra also has dual cup sizes which, we hope, makes choosing the right size a bit easier. Your boobs can grow considerably during your pregnancy and this way you’ve got a bit more room for change.

  • If you are B or C choose cup size B
  • If you are D or DD choose cup size D
  • If you are E or F choose cup size E

Second Skin Organic sleep & yoga maternity bra

Second Skin Organic_Sleep Bra_Ivory

Our Second Skin Organic sleep & yoga bra is made from super soft organic cotton (perfect for chapped and bleeding nipples) and is perfect for sleeping in or for gentle exercise. As with the Second Skin maternity bra, our sleep bra has a crossover front, although this time it is slightly more elasticated so that you can gently pull it to the side for nighttime feeds. No more faffing with nursing clips at 2am! The organic cotton is also really breathable, so the idea is that that you get less sweaty with all those hormones flying around.

Second Skin Organic Sleep bra size guide

We have put together a sizing chart unique to this bra to help you find the right size. It comes in five sizes; small, medium, large, x-large and small+ (for small backs but larger cups). To find your size, simply find your band size and cup size on the table and where they meet is your ideal size for this bra.

Second Skin strapless maternity bra

Second Skin_Strapless Maternity Bra_Nude

Our beautifully soft Second Skin strapless maternity bra is perfect under halterneck or strapless dresses. You’ll get 2 short fabric straps, 2 clear straps and 1 long fabric strap (for halterneck styles) with your bra. It also has firm side boning that won’t put too much pressure on your boobs and silicone along the top so that it won’t slip down when you’re not using the straps.

We’ve put together a little picture so that you can see what size you would need:

We offer the bra in a small, medium, large or a small+ (for small backs but larger cups). Use the chart in the same way as the one for the Second Skin Organic sleep bra (above).

Ultimately, it’s more about what is comfortable for you and gives you more support. Remember that you should try to fit your bra really tight in the band (under your boobs) and then the cups should be comfortable. You should try to have as little support as possible going through your straps, otherwise you’ll end up with a bad back. Do I really need to buy maternity underwear?

Of course buying maternity underwear might not be the highest on your list of priorities right now, but we think it’s something that you definitely might want to do!

When you’re pregnant, it’s perfectly normal to be the biggest fan of your bum. And whilst you might be looking a little more bootlicious, you’re probably not feeling that brilliant.

If this is the case, you might want to do something to make you feel fabulous. Now, there are plenty of things that can help do this.  Go get a massage… or treat yourself to something pretty. Which is where we come in! Why not treat yourself some underwear that is not only comfortable, but can also put a smile on your face. After all, you need to look after yourself when you are pregnant and (dare we say it) spoil yourself a little!

We have designed all of our maternity underwear to be as comfortable as possible. But we also believe that they will make you feel amazing, too.

How do I choose the right maternity bra?

Choosing the right maternity bra isn’t something that you should lose any sleep over, but there are a few things that you should consider. First and foremost, you need to make sure that the maternity bra is going to fit you. If it is too small then it will feel really tight and uncomfortable, but if it is too big then it won’t give you the support that you need.

Fortunately, for our maternity bras that don’t have traditional bra sizes, we’ve added a sizing chart to make your life easier. If this isn’t enough, we have detailed instructions on our what’s my size page with a very helpful video. If you are still unsure of what size to get, please drop us an email and we’ll do our best to find your perfect match!

What to look for in a good maternity bra

Apart from making sure that the bra fits you correctly, you need to make sure that the bra you’re buying is made from a soft fabric that will stretch and adapt to your new curves! Your body is going to go through quite a few changes over the coming months, so it’s important to get yourself a bra that you feel both comfortable and beautiful in!

We have used the finest super soft stretchy fabrics to make sure that all of our maternity bras will last throughout your pregnancy, leaving you with one less thing to worry about!

How do I measure my maternity bra size?

This is a question that we get quite often, so we’ve put together two really useful resources to help you! The first is our post, ‘how do I know what size maternity bra to buy?’ We’ve put together a really detailed run through on how to make sure you buy the correct maternity bra for you!

Nursing & Maternity bra size guide

We also have our fitting guide that you can check out. You need need to remember that when choosing a maternity bra, you need to think about what gives you the most support for your new curves! You need to have the band of your bra fit quite tightly under your boobs. Then, the cups should be more comfortable. Don’t rely upon the straps to burden the majority of the support, as this can cause problems for your back!

If you’re still unsure of your maternity bra size, you can give us a call on +44 (0)207 940 8250 if you would like more personally tailored advice!

What is the best time to purchase a maternity bra?

A question that pops into our inbox from time to time is ‘what is the best time to purchase a maternity bra?’ It’s a good question! When you’re pregnant it can feel like a total information overload, so we’re happy to help answer this.

So, when is a good time to buy a maternity bra?

Everyone is a little different, which means there is no set time to buy a maternity bra. You’ll notice that your regular bras will no longer fit you and will start to feel uncomfortable. We suggest that you get fitted (or fit yourself) for a maternity bra as soon as you find out your pregnant. Your body will start changing in ways you never thought possible (we’ve been there too!) and it’s always best to be prepared!

Unlike a regular bra, a maternity bra is designed to adapt to these changes. We’ve designed all of our maternity bras from stretchy fabrics that allow them to do this, whilst giving you as much support as we possibly can.

However, normal bras are not designed with this need for flexibility in mind. As your ribcage expands and your boobs shoot up a cup size (or more!), a regular bra can cause all kinds of problems for you. Aside from being extremely uncomfortable, the underwire can cause serious problems as your milk ducts develop, which could lead to mastitis.

We have now closed the site, but don’t worry, you can still get beautiful maternity & nursing lingerie at Cake Maternity. They make lovely products in a large range of sizes, which we’re sure you’ll also love. #lovethebodyyouarein
