Amoralia spoke this week to Lula Besana who told us her own moving baby scan story.

Lula writes:

“the 3D/4D scan I had with our baby was a lovely surprise. We paid for one whilst my Grandmother was here visiting from Italy, as a present for her 80th birthday. It meant such a lot to us, as Nan suddenly died when he was just 4 weeks old, before I could travel to Italy to introduce him, so I am glad she had the chance to ‘see him’ at the scan.

It’s not a perfect image because the baby had his hands in front of his face for the whole time. They sent me for walks, I had to drink LOADS of water, jump around etc… but nothing! He STILL had his hands in front of his face!!! But it still was a great experience and I’m glad my Nan had the chance to share it with us, bless her.”

When can I have my first baby scan?

Most NHS hospitals will offer women at least two ultrasound scans during your pregnancy. The first early pregnancy scan is usually when you are around 8-14 weeks pregnant and is sometimes called the dating scan, as it can provide you with your Estimated Due Date (EDD). The second scan usually takes place between 18 weeks and 20 weeks, 6 days. It’s called the ‘anomaly scan’ as it scans for structural abnormalities in the baby, and the ultrasound scans use sound-waves to build a picture of your baby in the womb.

When can we have a 3d/4D scan?

A 3D baby scan shows the baby in three dimensions, and a 4D scan is a moving image of a 3D scan!  A 3D/4D scan uses the same technology as the earlier 2D scans. The perfect time to perform a 3D/4D scan is between 24 and 32 weeks of pregnancy.
